Kachina Hill - A Desert Home of Solace

NEW DIGS: We said yes to a new adventure! This August, the Bidegains Three are packing up and moving west, to the other side of the scenic Santa Rita mountains.

WHERE: Amado, Arizona is our new home/family renovation project! Kachina Hill sits among cacti and mesquite on 9.5 acres, just north of Mac and Billie and just south of the Long Horn Grill, an iconic restaurant with an entrance in the shape of a cow skull.

BUILT TO LAST: A solid structure erected of burnt adobe in 1954, the house features unique desert details and requires just enough necessary upgrades and design updates to make it our home. If you’re not native, you may not have heard of burnt adobe before. It’s a regional material made in the northern part of Sonora, Mexico that gained popularity during the post-WWII building boom. Burnt adobe, which is different then mud adobe, is made of mud and clay that is formed into bricks, then fired in ovens. Burnt adobe bricks are much larger and thicker than red bricks and are easy to spot. There are 3 types of burnt adobe: Sasabe, Querobabi, and San Luis. Kachina Hill is made of Sasabe adobe which has an orange hue, while the Querobabi adobe is more red, and San Luis adobe is multicolored with hints of yellow, black, orange, red, and brown.

DETAILS: Our 2,000 sq ft. u-shaped desert home overlooks the Santa Cruz River with a perfect view of Elephant Head Peak. It's been uninhabited for over ten years which means our first order of business will be to tackle the well, electric, plumbing, cooling and then the roof will get a much needed overhaul. Windows, flooring, paint and bathrooms will be completed (fingers crossed!) by August and the fine tuning, fencing, trimming and landscape will be ongoing. A kitchen, handmade by Aaron is late in the to-do list, which means it will be a long grilling season. But with those views, who cares!

BIG THANKS: To Tim Burris for making the purchase a breeze and our family for supporting yet another vintage home adventure!
